Renewed Partnership: Imperial College London's Bioengineering Department

Imperial College London’s Bioengineering Department is pleased to renew its partnership with Boost following the success of a six-month pilot program. Initially launched in 2022, the collaboration has demonstrated significant improvements in student outcomes, particularly in foundational mathematics and quantitative skills.

Dr. Maria Parkes, Senior Strategic Teaching Fellow, and Ms. Julie Hoang, Learning Technologist, spearheaded the adoption of Boost’s "Math for Engineering" collection to provide scalable, 24/7 support for 1st and 2nd-year students. The renewal of this partnership solidifies Boost’s role as a critical learning tool within the department, ensuring ongoing support for future cohorts.

Impact of Adoption

The initial adoption of Boost yielded measurable improvements in academic performance and student engagement:

  • Higher Test Scores: Boost users improved their math test scores by an average of 16%, compared to a 5% improvement among non-Boost users.

  • Above-Average Performance: 44% of Boost users scored above the class average in their final assessments, compared to 20% of non-Boost users.

  • Active Engagement: Students watched 1,336 videos and completed 1,835 practice questions during the academic year.

Students who struggled with math before the program were particularly well-supported. For example, while pre-pilot test scores for Boost users averaged 69% compared to 78% for non-Boost users, post-pilot scores showed Boost users closing the gap and achieving an average of 85%, surpassing the 83% average for non-Boost users.

Student and Faculty Feedback

Feedback from students highlighted the clarity and accessibility of Boost’s resources. One student noted, “There’s a lot of exercises, and the fact that they show the correct way of doing them through video is amazing.” Many students praised Boost’s ease of navigation, and the clear explanations provided, which made challenging concepts more manageable.

Dr. Parkes emphasized the broader impact of Boost:

“Students most in need of tuition were well-supported, and the platform’s tailored learning pathways ensured they could strengthen foundational skills effectively.”

Moving Forward

With this renewed partnership, Imperial College London aims to expand Boost’s reach within the Bioengineering Department, supporting students across all levels. By continuing to provide accessible, personalized learning pathways, Boost will play a pivotal role in fostering academic success and confidence in quantitative subjects.

“We’re excited to continue our collaboration with Boost,” said Julie Hoang. “Its ability to address diverse student needs and improve outcomes aligns perfectly with our commitment to excellence in education.”
